Book Review: Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

Photobucket
Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs (342 pages)

Synopsis: What does a Fairy Queen, an overdue fae book, Samuel Cornick and Adam Hauptman have in common? Ding, ding, ding! That's right...Mercy Thompson.

Mercy Thompson finds herself having to choose between Samuel Cornick and Adam Hauptman, her mate, in order to keep Sam alive and safe...from himself. Adam is certain Mercy will leave him this time, especially after discovering that someone in his Columbia Basin Pack is trying to tear them apart by bond manipulation.

On top of that, Mercy, discovers she is the target of a Fairy Queen's quest to rule all that may go bump in the night, that started with a book she failed to return on time.

What's a kick-ass, coyote shape shifter to do? That's right, fix cars, aggravate good looking werewolves and kick some fairy queen ass.

Book Review:
I can't get enough of a main character who is independent, courageous, and smart about the way she conducts her business in all aspects of her fictitious life.

Patricia Briggs has done a wonderful job constructing each element of Mercy Thompson's character and granting the reader full access into Mercy's self awareness. In other words, I couldn't help but grow with Mercy and admire her character that much more.

This goes for every character in the Mercy Thompson novels.

Adam Hauptman is my favorite male character. He's werewolf, alpha, and Mercy's mate, and I was shocked to witness Adam just short of tears, asking Mercy not to leave him. It was gut wrenching, my heart went out to him. And Adam doesn't do vulnerability.

Reading the previous books in the series gave me a better look into character development, which to me, is always the best part. I know who or what relationships have blossomed and which ones fizzled, which ones I cheered for and which ones I gladly said good bye too.

For example, I began to hate, yes, hate a character named Ben because he was arrogant, got his kicks by intimidating Mercy, and was super selfish. Turns out, Ben also took a few bullets for his alpha, Adam Hauptman and he even pitched in to help Mercy beat the bad guys. How could I not be affected by this? And all I wanted to do was hate Ben. But there's characters out there you love to hate...you know what I'm talking about ;)

The plot itself was never lacking. The scenes had just the right rhythm and I was completely involved. So well in fact, as my hubby approached me to ask something, I told him to give me a minute to finish a scene. Of course, half hour later I was ready to answer him. I'm so bad, I know.

I love the Mercy Thompson novels and Silver Borne was no exception. If you haven't read the series, what are you waiting for? You will get a kick out of the big, bad werewolves of the Columbia Basin Pack and the kick ass coyote who isn't afraid to bite one every now and then.

Patricia Briggs!!

WOW Patricia Briggs may be one of the nicest most down to earth people ever! Not to mention an amazing author!! Tonight was so much fun, Karina and I started the night with an appetizer at the local mexican food joint, then we scooted over to Barnes and Noble. In good old Elizabeth fashion I didn't get out for under 70 bucks...BUT one of those books will be one of our lucky followers..details to come but the authographed book that Patricia Briggs is holding in the picture below will belong to someone, we just have to work out the details of the competition!! We met some amazing fans and had good times, and a couple hours of good ol' book talk. It's so amazing when you get a bunch of people together who just LOVE books! All in all it was an amazing night, and we are looking forward to hopefully be able to do a author spotlight with Patrica soon!!

I am totally gushing over one of my favorite authors, Patricia Briggs. Like Elizabeth pointed out, she must be one of the coolest, down to earth authors out there. I remember beginning to feel very nervous and excited when the crowd was told she was in the building. Being a nervous goofball that I am, I was like, "what do we do? clap? holler?" The wonderful ladies that we had met earlier agreed to make some noise including the rest of the crowd. It was especially great when Patricia Briggs made time to add to comments/questions Elizabeth and I had for her.

Awesome, great, excited, nervous experience and I wouldn't change a think about it.

Thank you, Patricia Briggs for a wonderful urban fantasy series. It was a real treat to me you and we can't wait to read Mercy Thompson's next adventure.

And silver Borne was a true knockout! Keep them coming ;)

I'm back! (and am now a HUGE Patricia Briggs fan)

Hi Everyone!!
Sorry for my long absence from book world! I have many of things on my plate...such as we moved into our first house, helping out my dad and stepmom and their production company. Along with that, I am working on hopefully starting my own catering/cake business. All this on top of working a full time job and being a wife to my wonderful and supportive husband and a mommy to my adorable puppy and 3 cats. Life has been crazy and as Karina said we've both had many life changing situations that we have been happily focused on.

HOWEVER, I have not forgotten any of you and am so happy to see some new faces on our follower list! You all should tell your friends about us...our blog is pretty amazing <3 On another note..Karina has been telling me and telling me and telling me that I HAVE to read the Mercy Thompson series written by Patricia Briggs. I have been dragging my feet, because I have tried to read the first and I guess third time is a charm...I have officially finished the book and now am a full on fan of Patricia Briggs and her Mercy Thompson series. In my opinion the story started off slow, and normally when a book starts out slow I loose interest as I did the first two times.

But thanks to the announcement that Patricia Briggs is doing a book signing at our very own Barnes and Noble and how many wonderful things I kept hearing about the series, I felt I had to give it another shot and so I went to AMAZON.COM and ordered the second and third book and settled down to read the first. I seriously had stopped just short of where the story gets good. I think what the hard part was is that these books are based on the town that I live and have grown up in. I know most all of the places she is talking about, which was hard for me to get past! I get pretty easily distracted nowadays! Mercy...I adore her character. I love any woman power character that can take care of her self! The other cool thing is the variety of people in the book. There are Fae, Vamps, Weres and then Mercy the shapeshifter. All the characters are so good and you get this great picture of what each would look like and how they would sound talking. I just can't get enough of this series now, and wish I would have taken the advice and read it before!! I am so excited to meet Patricia Briggs tomorrow night and much like Karina I will be taking my camera, and I will need to but the 3rd,4th, and 5th books!

Preview : Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

I am a die hard fan of the Mercy Thompson novels. I read all of the novels and the graphic novel back in October when my husband and I were visiting Vancouver, Canada for the weekend. And I remember saying, "hey, I'm missing a book! We have to go to a book store." We had visited Grouse Mountain all that day and wanted to relax. He was not happy but he took me anyway. Bless him. I don't believe I slept much during that weekend. Anyway, I can't wait for this book!

To be released March 30, 2010

Review by Harstan at www.Barnesandnoble.com

Even though the human population knows that vampires, werewolves, and fae exist, it does not preclude mortals from fearing the paranormal. Mechanic Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter who can turn into a coyote, but is mated with her beloved alpha werewolf Adam. His pack feels a coyote is beneath them on the food chain and using their mind control powers try to persuade Mercy that she is not good enough for their leader. While an outraged Adam is trying to ferret out who is destroying his pack and messing with his Mercy's mind, she has two other problems to contend with. Her friend Samuel the werewolf struggles with his human side so his beast keeps him alive while Mercy triess to give him a reason to live. A fairy wants her to return a powerful tome that a fae lent her; she kidnaps her friend Gabriel to insure Mercy cooperates, but the bookstore is shuttered permanently and Mercy knows the queen will try a double cross. The fifth Mercy Thompson urban fantasy is filled with action, romance and fae intrigue; perhaps the deadliest kind on the planet. Filled with various subplots that tie deftly together, the continuing adventures of Mercy and Adam make for another entertaining entry in a strong saga. However, it is Patricia Briggs' world-building skills on a par with early Laurell K. Hamilton that make Silver Borne a winner as readers will believe in shapeshifters, fae and vampires, oh my.
