Book Review: Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs (342 pages)

Synopsis: What does a Fairy Queen, an overdue fae book, Samuel Cornick and Adam Hauptman have in common? Ding, ding, ding! That's right...Mercy Thompson.

Mercy Thompson finds herself having to choose between Samuel Cornick and Adam Hauptman, her mate, in order to keep Sam alive and safe...from himself. Adam is certain Mercy will leave him this time, especially after discovering that someone in his Columbia Basin Pack is trying to tear them apart by bond manipulation.

On top of that, Mercy, discovers she is the target of a Fairy Queen's quest to rule all that may go bump in the night, that started with a book she failed to return on time.

What's a kick-ass, coyote shape shifter to do? That's right, fix cars, aggravate good looking werewolves and kick some fairy queen ass.

Book Review:
I can't get enough of a main character who is independent, courageous, and smart about the way she conducts her business in all aspects of her fictitious life.

Patricia Briggs has done a wonderful job constructing each element of Mercy Thompson's character and granting the reader full access into Mercy's self awareness. In other words, I couldn't help but grow with Mercy and admire her character that much more.

This goes for every character in the Mercy Thompson novels.

Adam Hauptman is my favorite male character. He's werewolf, alpha, and Mercy's mate, and I was shocked to witness Adam just short of tears, asking Mercy not to leave him. It was gut wrenching, my heart went out to him. And Adam doesn't do vulnerability.

Reading the previous books in the series gave me a better look into character development, which to me, is always the best part. I know who or what relationships have blossomed and which ones fizzled, which ones I cheered for and which ones I gladly said good bye too.

For example, I began to hate, yes, hate a character named Ben because he was arrogant, got his kicks by intimidating Mercy, and was super selfish. Turns out, Ben also took a few bullets for his alpha, Adam Hauptman and he even pitched in to help Mercy beat the bad guys. How could I not be affected by this? And all I wanted to do was hate Ben. But there's characters out there you love to hate...you know what I'm talking about ;)

The plot itself was never lacking. The scenes had just the right rhythm and I was completely involved. So well in fact, as my hubby approached me to ask something, I told him to give me a minute to finish a scene. Of course, half hour later I was ready to answer him. I'm so bad, I know.

I love the Mercy Thompson novels and Silver Borne was no exception. If you haven't read the series, what are you waiting for? You will get a kick out of the big, bad werewolves of the Columbia Basin Pack and the kick ass coyote who isn't afraid to bite one every now and then.
